Original Ecchi Cover Art + Banners
« on: November 03, 2017, 05:37:33 PM »
okay, so this is a workshop where you can put your ecchi story cover page "attempt". I can't do cover pages for sh*t. So let me and other practice by either:
1) giving constructive criticism and advice
2) redoing another member's cover art design
3) show/discuss effective examples to use as reference

Updated. I Threw this away.
.
it's a WIP. I haven't picked clothing design for one.

Artist notes: I have no idea what to put in the background. The three major settings for this story are a casino, prison, stage show area.

Artist concerns: Did i put too many characters? i wanted this to be a characters cover art. Maybe they are too far apart.

Hmm...by cover page, do you mean for a manga or for a website? The dimensions of both are vastly different from one another. That will also help me finalize a few critiques.

As for what you have in that WIP, I think there might not be too many characters per se, but there is something odd going on with the perspective. Usually you'd like characters to all fall on the same "eyeline", or at least, from what I've read. I also feel that having the background be a flat color might work better than the gradient, which kind of distracts me a little bit. It's very saturated, you know?

As you can see, this is an extreme rough draft. I know i have a lot of colors. I think i should only have 3 colors right? i don't know how to color.

I hate the candy house. It's suppose to be their candy shop.

The girl has no clothes because i don't know how to design her clothes. I've been looking up business casual and witch clothes to find a middle. Still nothing.

First Draft:
I really like it, but i am open for any constructive criticism.

Genre: Ecchi, supernatural, comedy

She looks a little confused, lol.
I don't know why you'd need to restrict yourself to three colors, but you may be onto some color theory stuff that I have no idea about.
As far as clothing goes, you can never really go wrong with a little black dress with frayed elbow sleeves for a witchy feel.

@mahlua
The three colors is something I heard. You supposedly use similar colors and pick the opposite color for high contrast. Or something.

I’m concerned that the cover will be too ecchi but I really want to show the butt   ;D

I mean you can still go for a minidress to give the witchy feel and still show the butt. It is a nice butt.

Not bad! The placement of the figure and the actual figure itself is quite good already. That being said, I could suggest a few things to improve this.

First, lets talk framing. The figure is the best part of this cover, and I think the girl should be the focus. If you want to show off her butt but not make it too ecchi, I would suggest tight jeans, tights in general, or shorter skirts. As for outfit ideas, boy do I have you covered if you're looking for modern but witchy!

Check out this girl's instagram, she, no joke specializes in that type of clothing. A lot of her stuff isn't ecchi per se, but you can be creative and alter them I think.

I have other resources as well regarding outfits, though I'd have to upload them to an imgur gallery or something. Let me know if these help!

Ok part two now, so once we've established that the character should be most important thing, I'm going to suggest just getting rid of the candy shop and the background. I think your backgrounds are weaker than your figure drawings, thus by including them they kind of take away from the good figure you've drawn and are a bit distracting. The girl holding the lollipop is already in my opinion good enough for the title to make sense as "Candy Shop".

Instead what I suggest you do is, aim for something like a gravure model cover.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/292538551802-0-1/s-l1000.jpg

These are just some samples, see how the figure is the center piece?

So the question now is, what do you do for the background? This is where you have to be creative. Rather than drawing a physical candy shop, try and extrapolate and do bright bold colors with candy symbols or something. In fact, take a look at that Catherine cover, it's literally just bright hot pink. Play around with your title, have it draw the viewer's eye to the figure's butt rather than having it just exist.

Lastly, regarding colours. I wouldn't worry about any hard rules regarding colour usage yet, I'd suggest experimenting and then scaling down if it doesn't look right. Play around with saturation and color correction to get the right look you're aiming for. Also, I'm pretty sure there are colour palettes out there that are described as "candy" colours. Grab some candy from a convenience store, take a look at the colours used in the food/packaging/branding, they use those colours for a reason! It's a good place to steal some ideas for colour palettes if candy is your theme.

To sum it up, I think by removing the background candy shop and replacing it with either just a solid color or if you want to make it more interesting, something abstract will make the overall cover better. Focus on the character, she's the best part of your cover!

Here are two somewhat related samples of what I mean. I made these a while back and never posted them, they aren't necessarily covers but they show what I mean when I suggest trying different types of backgrounds.

As a small side note though, definitely don't be afraid to push the contrast on your image! Dark bold shadows can really make your figure pop!

I think you win for content, mate. Now you get to go post those imgur links into your gallery, if you please.

Catinawitchat model gave me some ideas for the bad guys. I never use Instagram but maybe I should. This is the second time I ever looked at someone. Now I feel like a stalker, but without the shame????

Maybe by tomorrow I’ll have something better to show. Thank you Devola!!!

This new model definitely works, although I don't see why you didn't just make it a new post so it could be found more easily.

There might be too much pure white or too many saturated colors. I'm not sure what my eyes are doing. Maybe if everything on the background were super pastel to the point of almost being transparent, and if the background base color wasn't pure white...

But yes, definitely off to a better start with this version, I think. And we still get the glorious booty.

This is where i hit the brick wall. I have no idea what you mean by saturated colors or pastels.

To be fair, I didn't know how to use them until a little less than a year ago. Basically the background colors are so "bold" that they're taking away some of the "focus" that would probably be better put on the character. Think of saturation as "how much of the color is the color?"

Now this is a more abstract cover piece.
